History

Russian settlers founded the Obdorsk fort on the Ob in 1595, next to a Khanty settlement. Under the tsars and in Soviet times it was a place of exile, whose prisoners included Leon Trotsky and the Doukhobor leader Pyotr Verigin. Obdorsk was renamed Salekhard in 1933 and became a town in 1938. The name is translated from Nenets as 'settlement on a cape'.

Culture & traditions

The Shemanovsky Museum and Exhibition Complex, founded in 1906, tells the story of Yamal and its peoples. The Arctic Circle monument is a must-stop for visitors, and a reconstruction of the old fort recalls Obdorsk. In 2018 a burial about 4,500 years old, with ritual objects, was found near the city.

Food & drink

Yamal is stroganina country: thin shavings of frozen fish such as nelma, muksun or chir are the signature northern treat here.

Practical information

Salekhard Airport is 7 km north of the centre. The nearest railway station is at Labytnangi across the Ob, reached by ferry in summer and by an ice road usable nine to ten months a year. Since December 2020 a 344 km all-year road has linked the city with Nadym. The climate is subarctic, averaging −23 °C in January and about +15 °C in July; from early June to early July the sun never sets, which makes it the best time to visit.
