All good newsHistory
The settlement of Ust-Sysolsk is recorded from 1586, and in 1780 Catherine the Great granted it town status. In tsarist times the Komi region was a place of political exile. In 1930, on the 150th anniversary of its town charter, Ust-Sysolsk was renamed Syktyvkar, and from 1936 it was the capital of the Komi ASSR. The Sysola and Vychegda rivers, linked to the Northern Dvina, have long been a route for floating timber.
Culture & traditions
The National Museum, founded in 1911, and the National Gallery, opened in 1943, tell the story of Komi history and art. The Opera and Ballet Theatre has been staging performances since 1958, and the National Library holds about 2.5 million volumes. The folk ensemble Asya Kya represents the republic abroad. The region's spiritual history is tied to Stephen of Perm, who brought Christianity to the Komi in the 14th century and devised an alphabet for their language, known as Anbur.
Sport
The city's great sporting passion is bandy. The club Stroitel plays here, and in January 2017 Syktyvkar hosted the under-19 Bandy World Championship. The largest venue is the Respublikanskiy Stadium.
Food & drink
Komi cooking grew out of hunting, fishing and foraging, so it is rich in meat, fish, berries and mushrooms. Favourites include fish pies, various porridges, sour soups and cold soups made with bread kvass. One theory holds that pelmeni originated in Komi and Udmurt cuisine.
Practical information
The city has an airport and a railway station, and the R176 Vyatka highway ends here. Syktyvkar is on Moscow time. The climate is subarctic, with long harsh winters and short warm summers, so June to August is the best time to visit.
