History

A polar station opened nearby in 1932, and the settlement itself was founded in 1933 as a base on the Northern Sea Route. Tiksi became an urban-type settlement in 1939. In 1941–1944 Arctic convoys were assembled here. A polar geophysical observatory was built in 1957.

Culture & traditions

The settlement has a Museum of Arctic Art and Culture. A wooden Church of the Saviour was built here in 2006.

Practical information

Tiksi Airport has handled passenger flights again since 2013. In summer there are infrequent sailings down the Lena from Yakutsk, and sea navigation lasts less than three months, roughly from June to September. Local time is Moscow plus 6 hours. The climate is tundra: polar night lasts from 19 November to 24 January and the midnight sun from 11 May to 3 August, which makes summer the time to visit.

What to see

  • Seaport — the gateway to the Laptev Sea.
  • Ust-Lensky Nature Reserve — protected wilderness at the mouth of the Lena.
  • Museum of Arctic Art and Culture — the life and art of the Far North.
  • Church of the Saviour — a wooden church built in 2006.
