A useful cultural guide leaves room for difference. Habits vary between families, regions and workplaces. Treat these as conversation starters, not rules that describe everybody.
When visiting a home, ask about shoes and whether to bring something to the table. Mention dietary restrictions ahead of time. Start with the polite Russian “vy” and let your host suggest the informal “ty”.
Ask before photographing people or entering restricted spaces in museums, workshops and places of worship. A few Russian phrases can open a conversation, even if you then use a translator.
