NORTHWESTERN FEDERAL DISTRICT

Kaliningrad Oblast.

Russia's westernmost region sits on the Baltic coast between Poland and Lithuania, cut off from the rest of the country. Prussian castles and churches stand alongside Soviet neighbourhoods and the sand dunes of the Curonian Spit. It is also the world's great amber country.

History

Prussian tribes once lived here. From the 13th century the Teutonic Order conquered the land, founding Königsberg in 1255; in 1525 Grand Master Albert turned the Order's lands into the Duchy of Prussia. During the Seven Years' War, in 1758–1762, the area was briefly under Russian rule. After the Second World War northern East Prussia passed to the USSR: Königsberg Oblast was created in April 1946, and in July the region and its capital were renamed after Mikhail Kalinin.

Culture & traditions

Immanuel Kant lived and worked in Königsberg, and his grave lies beside the cathedral on Kant Island, once called Kneiphof. The cathedral was restored in the 1990s as residents rediscovered the city's German heritage. Old city gates and fortification towers survive; one of them, the Dohna Tower, has housed the Amber Museum since 1979. The Museum of the World Ocean keeps real ships at its quay, among them the research vessel Vityaz and a submarine.

Nature

The region's great natural treasure is the 98-km Curonian Spit, a narrow strip of sand between the sea and the Curonian Lagoon. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2000 and a national park since 1987. The spit has tall dunes such as the Efa Height and the Dancing Forest of strangely twisted pines. To the south lies the Vistula Lagoon, and the Neman and Pregolya rivers cross the land. The local 'blue earth' holds about 90% of the world's explored amber reserves.

Sport

The region's leading football club is Baltika. It plays at Kaliningrad Stadium, built for the 2018 FIFA World Cup, when the city hosted tournament matches. The city also has the women's volleyball team Lokomotiv, founded in 2018, and the American football club Amber Hawks. In earlier years the city was also known for the volleyball club Dynamo-Yantar.

Food & drink

The local table still carries traces of the Prussian past. The best-known treats are Königsberg marzipan and Königsberger Klopse meatballs. With the sea and lagoons so close, fish is a natural part of everyday meals. Königsberger Fleck, a beef tripe soup, also comes from here, though it is now rarely cooked. Königsberg marzipan makes a fitting sweet souvenir to take home.

Practical information

The main gateway is Khrabrovo Airport, 24 km from Kaliningrad. Direct trains run to Moscow and Saint Petersburg. Local time is one hour behind Moscow. The climate is mild, between maritime and continental: winters hover around freezing, and July averages about 17–18 °C. The best time to visit is late spring to early autumn, when the dunes and beaches are at their best.
