A team from MIPT and two Russian Academy of Sciences institutes in Tomsk studied iron–gadolinium coatings. Small magnetic domains in the selected sample grew larger during cooling, observed using magnetic force microscopy.

MIPT’s Za Nauku magazine reported the work on 15 October. The authors envisage applications in sensors and cooling. The study concerns material samples; working devices remain a future prospect.
