Researchers from Sirius University and MIPT enclosed carbonic anhydrase and hollow gold nanoparticles in a porous alumina matrix. Infrared laser light heated the particles to control the reaction, while the matrix protected the enzyme. The Russian Science Foundation reported the study on 26 October.
In experiments, activity was nine times that of the free enzyme. The material retained activity through 11 heating and cooling cycles. This is a laboratory result; industrial CO₂ capture remains a direction for further development.
