The model uses records from real freight journeys.

The Russian Science Foundation reports that Omsk State Transport University researchers combined train-motion physics with machine learning. Training data came from more than 1,500 freight journeys on the West Siberian Railway.

The model is intended to identify less energy-intensive driving strategies. Trials in railway operations are still planned: the reported results do not establish electricity savings already achieved on the network.
